Our latest exhibit features oil on canvas landscape paintings by Gerald Hennesy and Regina Miele, and classic still life paintings in the Dutch manner by Matt Tymowski. These artists’ paintings invite the viewer to experience the vivid colors and luminous landscapes of autumn in the Virginia countryside, from the rolling foothills of the Shenandoah Valley to the crisp peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Gerald Hennesy painted in an impressionistic style, working both in plein-air and in his studio. He passed away in March 2022 at the age of 100 and was our most beloved artist and an inspiration to all who knew him. During his lifelong career, Gerry pioneered many of the plein air societies in Virginia, giving encouragement to young artists to paint outdoors as the original Impressionists did in the late 1800s. A master of composition and plein air landscape, it was important to Gerry that the subject he chose for the painting was exciting to him, so it was then also exciting and interesting to the viewers of his completed work. Once a scene was selected and the composition sketched, Gerald painted rather rapidly, while attempting to achieve a freshness of color and expressiveness in his brushwork. He was particularly concerned with depicting the effect of light on his landscapes. His work has been exhibited widely in commercial and museum galleries including the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Georgia Museum of Art, The Corcoran Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Museum. His paintings are in numerous private, corporate and public collections, including the U. S. House of Representatives, the State Department, the Maryland State Mansion, the DAR Headquarters, and the American Legion Headquarters. He is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in American Art.

Regina Miele is a classically trained painter with a highly disciplined focus on representational landscapes. Exploring the fundamental tenets of order and place, her collection showcases the vastness of Virginia’s forests and waterways. A rich tapestry of colors and texture define the flowing waters of the Shenandoah Valley, and the cloud covered mountains of the Blue Ridge. Regina attended the Catholic University of America and, in her junior year, studied abroad at the Scuolo Lorenzo di Medici in Florence, Italy. The experience of intensive studio concentration in painting, drawing, sculpture, and theory, in the birthplace of the Renaissance solidified a commitment and passion for a career as an artist. Her work is on display in both national and international venues and has been featured in multiple art publications.

Matt Tymowski is a classical realist painter with a profound appreciation for the Dutch and Old Master styles from which he draws. His still-life paintings display a mastery of light and shadow, with an intense focus on perspective and detail. His collection will feature the bountiful cornucopias and natural beauty that characterize autumn and the kaleidoscope of colors in Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains. While primarily self-taught, Matt’s artistic journey has been enriched by studies at the Grand Central Atelier in New York, where he honed his technical skills and deepened his appreciation for the classical approach to art, which has served as a springboard to explore form, color, and composition in his works. In his private life, Matt works full time as an emergency medicine physician, using art to find balance with the intense professional demands he faces each day. In addition, he is also a Professor of Medicine at VCU. Matt Tymowski has won several awards in the Virginia Commonwealth University National Arts Program Exhibit.
