delicate, sometimes bold, these floral and botanical compositions will thrill you with the
energy of this new season. The exhibit will begin on May 4 th and continue through
Sunday, May 29th. There will be a reception for the artists on Saturday, May14 th from
4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The exhibition and reception are both open to the public and
everyone is cordially invited to attend.
Carolyn Marshall Wright
After over twenty years of working with watercolor, Carolyn remains fascinated by this medium that conveys such luminosity and light. As she grew as an artist, she became intrigued by abstract images, and began working with acrylics and collage as she further explored color and structure. Still, for a number of years, her abstract acrylic work remained separate and distinct from her representational watercolors. This quote from painter George de Groat captures much of how Carolyn works: “Paint from the inside out”. Her painting is an emotional response to the world around her. When she is astonished by beauty, she wants to respond--not to copy that precise beauty, but to create more beauty that will, in its turn, evoke an emotional response in the viewer. Carolyn is a signature member of the Virginia Watercolor Society, a member and past president of Potomac Valley Watercolorists and a frequent exhibitor in juried exhibitions in the Mid-Atlantic region. Her work has hung in the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, in the World Bank, and is in numerous private collections around the world.
Dmitry Dorokhin
Born in Volgograd (south of Russia), Dorokhin loved to draw and wanted to become an artist from an early age. He was mesmerized by the paintings of the Old Masters whose works he saw in art magazines. He began his art education in St. Petersburg, Russia at the Stiglitz Academy of art and industrial design. After graduation, he began work in multiple media: enamel on metal, glass, ceramic, watercolor, oil and acrylics. His heart remained with glass casting and watercolor. Internationally recognized for his glass sculpture, most of his works are in private collections in Europe and Russia.
Caroline Cutrona Hottenstein
Caroline Cutrona Hottenstein is a native Northern Virginian. At an early age, art was part of her life. Her mother was a fashion illustrator in the 1940’s, and her grandfather was a sculptor. She has an AA ’71 from Marymount University, a BA ‘73 in Graphic Design and an MFA ’76 (thesis in etching), both from American University. A free-lance artist since 1973, she has worked in various media. Caroline has taught in the Fine Art and Fashion Merchandising programs at Marymount and free-lanced at National Geographic’s Book Service Department. As a botanical illustrator since 1986, her artistic observations have been expressed through traditional watercolor, pen and ink, and graphite techniques. Other artistic interests include landscapes, still life, historical and nature subjects. She has taught classes, lectured and presented programs related to art and textiles. Caroline is represented in Carnegie Mellon’s Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation and is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists.
